We are lucky enough to live in a place considered a vacation destination for many - especially during the summer with their kids. This summer, be sure to take advantage of the wonderful place that we live!

FAMOUS SAN DIEGO PLACES

Wild Animal Park (Escondido) & San Diego Zoo (San Diego)

The best membership value. $89 for 2 adults and $24 for children ages 3-11 get you into both parks for a year!

Legoland (Carlsbad)

"Model Mom Club" at Legoland every Thursday morning. The water parks here are a lot of fun for the kids and a great way to cool off!

SeaWorld

Beautiful grounds and incredible aquariums. The polar bears, killer whales and shark exhibits are always a favorite, but be sure to check out the Manatees too! Sesame Street is coming to SeaWorld at the end of May, which will include a 2 acre play area with family-friendly rides and character appearances.

OUTDOOR FAVORITES

Quail Botanical Gardens (Encinitas) - www.qbgardens.org
Visit the interactive children's garden, Seeds of Wonder. Almost every morning features a different activity at 10am for kids 18 months to 6 years. This includes storytime, potting their own plant, painting, etc. They also have a great train and playhouse for the kids to check out. Free admission on the first Tuesday of each month!

Weidner's Gardens (Leucadia) - www.weidners.com
A great family-owned nursery. Kids can play in the grass area and visit the goats & ponies. They also have "dig your own" begonias, pansies, etc.-great place for the kids to dig in the dirt!

Bates Nut Farm (Valley Center) - www.batesnutfarm.biz
Their mission is to provide a unique, rural, historical farm experience for generations to come. They have many special family-friendly events planned all summer long.

U-Pick Strawberries (Carlsbad) - www.carlsbadstrawberrycompany.com
You've seen the sign from the freeway-try it out with the kids! Large buckets are $11 and quart sized buckets are $6. Let the kids pick their own and then head home to make strawberry shortcake!

Zoomars - Petting Zoo (San Juan Capistrano) - www.zoomars.com
Zoomars is a fantastic petting zoo with goats, emus, llamas, donkeys, alpacas, sheep, geese, ducks, guinea pigs and a bunny patch, all located in downtown San Juan Capistrano. It's an easy drive. Or... for the more adventurous, an easy train ride - thhe Amtrak station is a short walk. Zoomars also includes pony rides and a miniature train. It's worth the trip.

Certified farmers markets operate just about every day of the week, except Mondays, in more than 25 locations throughout San Diego County and in Temecula, just across the Riverside County line.

STREET FAIRES & FESTIVALS

San Diego Fair (Del Mar)
Runs from Saturday, June 14 through Sunday, July 6. The Fair will be closed two Mondays, June 16 and 23.
Summer of Sports is the 2008 Fair theme, celebrating athletics and sportsmanship in our county and beyond. The Summer of Sports Exhibit will showcase sports history, memorabilia, interactive exhibits and more. .

2008 Rods & Woodies Street Classic Car Show (Encinitas)
June 19, 2008 - July 17, 2008 - August 21, 2008 - September 18, 2008
The streets of Downtown Encinitas will be rockin' and rollin' when "Rod & Woodies Classic Car Show" comes to Downtown Encinitas June through September.

Carlsbad Art in the Village (Carlsbad)
August 10th, 9am to 5pm
10th annualy fair higlighting beautifully handcrafted fine arts and crafts.

19th Annual Encinitas Taste of Main Street Food Festival (Encinitas)
Thursday, August 21st from 6-9pm in Downtown Encinitas
Participating restaurants will offer delicious samples of a vast variety of food. Guests will be treated to about 30 different taste sensations.

 

 

COMMUNITY CONCERTS

TGIF Concerts in the Park (Carlsbad)
Held every Friday from June through August
Some of the venues have changed this summer because of the huge turnout last year (3,000 to 4,000 people attended each concert last summer!). Concerts take place on Friday evenings, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., and begin in late June and run through the summer. The concerts are not just a great family event, but also a tradition for many music lovers. 2008 Schedule

Balboa Park offers free admission on the following Tuesdays of each month (usually to permanent exhibitions only). Here's the schedule:
